Raul Metsma is a senior architect at RaulWalter and one of the company’s most technically capable engineers, focusing on the development of large-scale eID systems, smartcard technologies, cryptographic protocols, and critical infrastructure components. He has more than 20 years of experience in software development, security technologies, and national information systems. He has played a central role in numerous projects that underpin the reliability and security of international identity solutions.

Raul has worked on eID ecosystem development since 2008, including ID-card drivers and middleware, new Digi-ID generations, implementation of out-of-band signing methods, development of WebExtension-based platforms, and smartcard and ePassport solutions for multiple countries. His work also covers remote processes such as applet updates, certificate renewal mechanisms, key management solutions, and remote-fix protocols.

In addition, Raul has contributed to several international projects, including cryptographic key management systems, identity card personalisation workflows, e-signature platforms, tachograph certification services, 3-D Secure ACS 2.0 solutions, and X-Road–based data exchange systems. His expertise has been critical in resolving major eID security incidents, including key- and certificate related vulnerabilities.

Raul has a strong academic background, having completed a master’s degree at Tallinn University of Technology cum laude, alongside a bachelor’s degree from the Estonian IT College. He is a certified Qt developer and proficient in multiple programming and systems technologies used in the development and maintenance of critical infrastructure.
